Pulsations

Pulsations

It’s not uncommon for an artist to work in series to explore an idea through iterations. For a potter the tendency is more endemic. Professional wheel throwers make series of works. They develop an idea, then perfect a process by which that idea comes into being.

This differentiates contemporary art potters from historically traditional potters. Art potters often make distinctive individual works. However, even as a sculptor, I tend to work in the mode of a traditional potter, perfecting a process as an exploration of an originally envisioned idea. This approach manifests even in my recent work, where I’ll make a hundred pieces to explore a single idea. The moment I thoroughly understand the idea, I’m done with the series.
